Can the human condition change radically?
Public Talk 1
Thought limits our lives
Public Talk 1 Bombay
January 23, 1982
What is happening to humanity throughout the world? What has made us what we are? Do you observe the world around you or are you so concerned with your problems that you don’t look? Thought directs us and we base our actions on it. Can there be a mind unburdened by thought, where thought has its place? Hurt begins when you have an image about yourself.
Public Talk 2
Why have we lost relationship with nature and each other?
Public Talk 2 Bombay
January 24, 1982
What is relationship? If you have no relationship with nature, you have no relationship with humanity. Life is relationship; without relationship we cannot exist. But we have reduced relationship to sensory responses. Struggling to become something is essentially selfish. Is it possible to live a life in which there is no conflict? To change this corrupt society, you must change yourself radically.
Public Talk 3
The movement of fear
Public Talk 3 Bombay
January 30, 1982
Why have we not been able to solve the problem of fear? If I am comparing myself with you, I cannot discover what I am. Can you live with intelligence, which is the ultimate security? If there was no authority whatsoever, how would you behave? Be aware of how the brain looks at desire, how it feels it and what its sensation is. Can one be aware at the moment thought creates the image? In this extraordinary attention, no image is formed. Remaining with ‘what is’ and its resolution has no time.
Public Talk 4
Remaining with suffering without thought
Public Talk 4 Bombay
January 31, 1982
The consciousness of each is the common consciousness of all humanity. You are not an individual. Do we have a sense of beauty in our lives, or is life becoming mediocre, meaningless, with struggle from morning till night? Can you ever end your suffering, not only the personal suffering but the suffering of humanity? The global sorrow and your sorrow are not two separate sorrows. Love is to negate everything that is not love.
Public Talk 5
Fragmentation, time and death
Public Talk 5 Bombay
February 06, 1982
Is there any justice in the world? Must we live in fragmentation and conflict? We have created psychological time, the inward time that thought has put together. Avoiding, postponing, putting death at a distance, is fragmentation of our lives. What is it that is dying? To what you are attached? Death means you can’t have anything when you die. Death is an ending and has extraordinary importance in life: the ending of your attachment, pride and antagonism.
Public Talk 6
Without meditation there is no religious mind
Public Talk 6 Bombay
February 07, 1982
Without putting order externally and in ourselves, meditation has no meaning. Conflict and contradiction are the essences of disorder. We don’t see ‘what is’. Trying to transform ‘what is’ into ‘what should be’ is duality. The negation of all the content of consciousness is a religious mind. There is in us a sense of duality: the controller and the controlled, the observer and the observed, the experiencer and the experienced, the thinker and the thought. Meditation is to understand or come upon that space which is not put together by thought as the ‘me’ and the ‘not me’.
